Why Use AIRMAN?

The core of an effective Safety Management System is the ability to retrieve and shape data so that you can determine fact-based trends and adjust your management activities accordingly. Simply put, it moves you from Reactive Management to Pro-Active Management. That mindset is very hard to achieve using the traditional paper method. While still legal, a stack of papers cannot help you when you require a quick and accurate answer. You might be tempted to use basic level software such as spreadsheets, but they soon become very limited and inefficient as well. Paper and spreadsheets cannot give you an accurate picture from multiple angles.

The only way to correctly manage SMS is to utilize a database system designed for that very purpose. A system that delivers data at your fingertips how you want it, when you want it. This is what we call “Information Liquidity” and this is what AIRMAN does for you. AIRMAN is a collection of distinct logging systems (modules) that contain all the necessary forms, reports and query filters to manage those activities such as Wildlife Management, Equipment, FOD Control. In addition to managing those areas, these modules also collectively supply the master SMS module with valuable information that can be accessed for a number of SMS related reasons. These include running Risk Assessments, monitoring Key Performance Indicators(KPI’s or Targets), conducting Human Factors Analysis(HFACS), managing Corrective Actions or simply optimizing the data to look for positive and negative trends. Collectively that data flow provides a “Systems Dashboard” whereby you can monitor activities.

A Case Study

Greater Toronto Airport Authority at Toronto’s Pearson International had been using AIRMAN for years primarily for Wildlife Management. A few years ago it was decided to integrate SMS using AIRMAN to manage incidents, conduct Risk Assessments and Human Factors Analysis (HFACS). This integration took place under live conditions. As a result, AIRMAN, along with the existing human processes Toronto already had in place earned the highest score of 5 or “Best Practice” during an independent SMS “Gap Analysis” .* In addition, AIRMAN has also consistently met or exceeded the International audit requirements of the GTAA’s ISO 14001 Certification since 1999.
